Synopsis
IN THEATRES: MARCH 3, 2000 (NATIONAL)After stealing the show as Julia Roberts' wacky gay confidant in MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING, Everett (SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE) returns with a similar role -- as landscape designer/father of the year Robert -- in a film that offers him more room to shine, but rarely lives up to its potential. Co-starring Madonna (EVITA) in a vaguely autobiographic role as Abbie, this serio-comedy chronicles their attempt to form an unconventional family in a positive, feel-good manner, but considering the sizable talent assembled -- most notably director Schlesinger (MIDNIGHT COWBOY) -- the end product feels shapeless and flat. Ropelewski's (LOOK WHO'S TALKING NOW) screenplay stumbles over its own staccato dialogue and emotional transitions, and never gels into a cohesive story. Instead it comes across as two distinct movies: a light screwball comedy followed by an emotional courtroom melodrama. Compounded with the uneven script is Davis's (FORCES OF NATURE) disorienting cinematography -- shot almost entirely in close-up -- which undermines facial expressions and emotional details with a wash of soft lighting. Madonna once again proves to be a better singer than actress, though she does play well off of Everett, whom, in the film's lighter moments, displays his ample comedic talents. The supporting cast is strong, featuring Bratt (LAW AND ORDER) as Abbie's love interest, Redgrave as Robert's theatrical mother, Harris (STARSHIP TROOPERS) as a friend living with HIV, and Stumpf as the precocious child, Sam. Fans of the pop diva will surely find pleasure in her undeniable aura as well as her rendition of "American Pie" (featuring backing vocals by Everett), and Anglophiles will delight in Everett's generous charm, which save an otherwise uneven endeavor.
